Lesson 6: Africa

Chapter 6
-We'll focus mostly on Egypt

~Heka/Heka Beliefs

-Heka: Egyptian name for the concept of magic
-mystical force that created gods
-controlling it made Egyptians more powerful
-Priesthood and up more revered, likely to be magical
-ivory used for foci (tools allowing Egyptians to focus magic)
-One had to be pure to practice heka freely
-legal requirement to carry ivory and other things
-Wands back then less powerful, but not the individuals

~Hieroglyphs (Prof. Wessex Lecture)

-Runes: "a mark or letter of mysterious or magical significance"
-hieroglyphs very powerful
-power of runes has little to do with power of the individual
-runic magic incredibly strong and long-lasting
-runes reinforce themselves and complement each other
-items inscribed with runes are made stronger
-once enchanted, runic magic is permanent

~Secrets & Lies

-Secrecy played a large role in magical happenings across Africa and Middle East
-Priests developed word systems with rituals and passed them down
-vague enough that commonplace priests could not understand them

~Breakin' Care of Business

-Egyptian curse breakers aka Maheka-Lala
-5 years of post-Hogwarts training required
-very rewarding

~The End

-Egypt crumbled despite its power
-taken over by Greeks, in turn were taken over by Romans
-Around 500 CE during Roman reign, magical people gathered in Constantinople
-Gathering was called “International Summit of Magical Communication.”
-It was decided there that the common spellcasting language would be Latin
-Roman citizens spoke Latin
-lead to a decrease in the use of Egyptian spells
