In America, the people have more rights. For example, the American muggles have the right to have 'firearms', a type of metal wand that they use to kill and protect themselves.

Muggle-borns have had a lot of troubles in America. They were the subject of Race Riots in the 40s, when they were asking for more rights, as they had not been given many of them. It is most similar to the Civil Rights Movement of the Sixties, in which Muggles wanted more rights for the African-American community. Like the Muggles, Muggleborns were granted more rights and freedoms, though it was a long fought battle, lasting from the early nineteenth century to 1972 C.E.

Gay people have always had more rights in the wizarding world, as it has always seemed normal to magical folk. Mot of the gay rights activists you hear about are actually wizards in disguise, trying to give Muggles more rights in their communities.
