Wizarding Schools

Chapter 3

There are three main magical schools in America: Charlotte Academy for Magic, Chicago School for Magic, and San Francisco Academy. However, there are a few, smaller, harder to get into schools to be found around the country.

Charlotte Academy for Magic

At Charlotte Academy for Magic in Charlotte, North Carolina, students learn all the necessary classes; Defense Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Potion, and so forth. But, as required by the American Ministry for Magic, they must also learn a  language, such as French, Geman, Gobbledegook, Mermish, and Italian.

The Charlotte Academy for Magic crest is a blue eagle on a red background, under which it says "Country before School", and, needless to say, it is very pro-Ministry, abiding by all the rules which it sets forth and soforth.

The Charlotte Academy uniform is Blue robes, with the crest sewn over the heart.

There are two teams to which each person is assigned as they enter the school, Red and White. They are sort of like the Hogwarts Houses, although it is much more black and white: Red is bad, White is good.

Chicago School for Magic

At Chicago School for Magic, in Chicago, Illinois, the classes are very much the same, although participation in sports or Care of Creatures is mandatory. Most are put into Care of Magical Creatures, as the House Quidditch teams are very difficult to get into. As with Charlotte Academy, the American Ministry of Magic requires a language.

The crest is a dragon sitting on a rock under the sun. The motto for the school is "For the Brawn are Many", and it sets itself above the other two schools by putting its faith in brawn, rather than brain.

The Chicago School uniform is black robes, on which the crest is sewn to the right.

There are three houses at this school, and there is no difference between them, really.

San Francisco Academy

At San Francisco Academy, in San Francisco, California, they tend to focus more on defense and the liberal arts. They offer classes in Magical Law, Music, Psychology, and Duelling, as well as the core classes. They don't have a sports team, though they have sports clubs which will on occasion, play against each other. If you plan on working with American Muggles, this is the school to go to, as they have the best degree for it. Muggle Studies and the likes are all mandatory here.

The crest for San Francisco Academy is a Golden Gate Bridge in front of a setting sun. Their motto is "Cleverness Above All Else", and they tend to set high standards in intelligence. They are most reluctant to do what the ministry tells them.

At San Francisco Adademy, the school uniform is a sweater and jeans, or a school t-shirt and shorts, both worn by both genders.

There are no houses at this school, as those who founded the school did not want to separate the students.

Salem Institute for Magical Sudies

Salem Institute for Magical Studies, in Salem, Massachusetts, is a difficult school to get into, and usually you have to have a lot of money or a family member who was a student there. At Salem, they tend to focus more on protection of our world for Muggles, and have produced more Aurors than any other school. They take Muggle Studies and Defense Against the Dark Arts very seriously at Salem, and also offer Beginners Combat for third and fourth year, and Advanced Combat for fifth year and above. They also teach Apparition starting in year one at Salem, though this has been heavily supervised by the Ministry for Magic.

The crest for Salem is two crossed wands on a blue background. Their motto is "Protection over All".

The uniform for Salem Institute is eggshell white robes.

There are four teams at this school, based not on status, but on living quarters.

Sam Adams Academy

Sam Adams Academy is located in Boston, Massachusetts, in Freedom Boulevard. They are free to go into Freedom Boulevard on Saturdays and Sundays and during the Holidays. Defensive magic is focused on here, as there are many werewolves, vampires, and other magical creatures that could harm the Magical and Muggle residents of Boston.

The crest for SAA is two crossed muskets on a red background, alluding to the fact that they fought in the American Revolution. (See the chapter on American Wizards in Muggle Wars) Their motto is "America over All", and they are most patriotic of all the American schools, though feeling more allegiance to the Muggle government.

Their uniform is black robes on which the crest is sewn over their heart.

The students of the school tend to live around Boston, so there are no teams or houses, though there are dorms for out of state students.

Sunnydale Institute for Magical Learning

Sunnydale is located in New York state, though the exact location is known only to students and alumni of the school, and various Ministry officials. They have a fearsome reputation for teaching the Dark Arts, rather than the defense against it. However, the Ministry has set some restrictions on what they can and cannot teach, such as the Unforgivable Curses. Any teacher found teaching them, and they will receive a life sentence in Amerigon, the American wizard prison.
The crest for Sunnydale is a snake eating a crow, a reference to their campaign to have American Minister for Magic and former American Wizarding Defense Association commander, Alda Crow. Their motto is "For the Greater Good", borrowed from Gellert Grindelwald, and possibly alluding to the fact that he was a former teacher there.
Sunnydale's uniform is black and green robes.
