Lesson 4 (Incantations)

Chapter 4

Lesson 4:

General notes

- Phoenician Alphabet 1050 BC; early root of modern alphabet

- Incantations mostly Latin based in Europe (Incantations
dependent on area of origin? Ie, Greece/Turkey would have Greek roots, N.A.
would have Native American dialects?)

- Intonation and pronunciation matter. Improper could cause
backfire, or completely different spell

Continued practice with previous weeks’ spells. Meditation
session, per usual.

Spells

Fire-Making charm (“Incendio”; curved flick up/down). Static
wrist, movement from elbow, slightly twist hand on upswing, back down on
downswing. Works best if peak of movement sharp. CONCENTRATE on object and idea
of fire, not on seeing fire where you want it.

Took many tries to get this spell to work. (Accidentally
extinguished flame once I finally got it lit.) Was too concerned with
visualizing the candle lit. Once I focused on the feeling of fire rather than
seeing the fire, the spell worked. **Intent rather than visualization for this
spell.

Locomotion charm (“Locomotor”; circle in plane with floor,
flick up toward target to finish) Simpler to cast than Incendio. Stays active
without direct concentration (ie levitation spells) Almost broke my trunk
though by not being specific—spell is easy to cast, less so to control.
Defining target makes control easier. (Also glaring at the wayward object seemed
to help.)
