Lesson 3 (Wand Properties/Movements)

Chapter 3

General notes

- Wands can be semi-sentient, but are nonliving

- Power linked to bond between wand/wizard. Typically
similar “personality” to chosen wizard

- Targeted spells, keep wand pointed toward target when
moving

- Can only master as many spells as can remember correctly

Practiced meditation again—tingling feeling lessened. Must
be due to noticing preexisting power (like an itch: the more you notice it the
more it itches). Also continued practice with flight charms.

Spells

Mending charm (“Reparo”; downward pointed triangle/inward
spiral). Wrist should be kept static; full arm movement. Visualization
important. Remember—cannot repair magical, can’t violate conservation of mass. Also
bigger repairs require longer casting.

Practiced first with a stick, so could be rebroken without
worrying that I couldn’t mend what I was practicing on. Moved on to a plate
from the Great Hall—required more concentration than the stick, and more
exaggerated spiral. (The smaller the object, the smaller the movement required?
Does size of movement cancel out duration?)

Unlocking charm (“Alohomora”; backwards S, sweep up at end
from wrist). Incantation/movement timing must match. Practiced on a Muggle
tumbler lock—fairly easy to accomplish—and practiced breaking Locking Charm.
Must point wand at lock at all times; movement does not have to be large.
