Chapter 16
Dear Diary,
I’m so excited. I have a diary! I was begging mom for weeks to give me one, and today she did. I always wanted a diary. It’s so much fun to write in one. Oh, wait, I have to introduce myself.
My name is Carol. I live with my mom and dad, though dad is always working in farm and I barely get to see him. He has been working for a week without coming home. I was the one who used to give him lunch and dinner, but since I have to work for the manor, mom has to go give him. I wish the manor had asked someone else. Mom is really sick, if I go work there, no one will be here to take care of her.
Yesterday, I talked with Zachary. He hit me with a stone, but he apologised and fetched the water from the well. He is quite nice, but he’s always causing trouble. But he is nothing like the manor. The manor is really rude and treats us like slaves. Many times there were rumours that he’ll destroy the entire village and build fancy houses.
I wish me, mom and dad lived in one like that. I wish we were rich. Then mom would be cured by a professional doctor, dad wouldn’t have to work so hard and I would go to a good school. Aunty Ella doesn’t teach us a lot. She only says about how to fetch water and grow crops. Aunty Laura was good, she taught us how to read and write. Otherwise you would be useless. I was so upset when I heard she had died. I had locked myself for an entire day. I couldn’t stay longer in there of course, I had to work. Zachary told he has his private tutor. It means that a good teacher comes to his home and teaches him. But he doesn’t like it, he says it’s boring. I liked to go to school, but this year I didn’t like it a lot. We never learn about English or History. Sometimes Aunty Ella doesn’t even teach, she says us to cook for her. One time I asked why we weren’t learning, and she hit me really badly. I didn’t say anything to mom or dad, they already had lots of problems.
But I’ll get to learn today. Zachary told me he’ll give me his books. I was so happy. If I get to learn more, then I could go to the city and get a proper job. And mom and dad would be happy.
I have to sleep diary. I’ll write to you tomorrow. Goodnight Diary!
