Chapter 6

Today in class we discussed concentration and how it applies
to various charms, including the Patronus Charm, the Locomotion Charm, and
others. Then we learned two new charms, the Sunlight Charm and the Dancing
Lights Charm. We did not, however, have time to practice these charms, so I
waited to practice until I was in my dorm room, which has been rather quiet of
late. I figured that it would be a good place to practice concentration, as I
would not be easily distracted there. First, I worked with the Sunlight Charm.
I practiced the wand movement, which was similar to the movement for the
Wand-Lighting Charm. Then I practiced the incantation, Lumos Solem. Next, I put everything together. My first attempt was
a small light that fizzled out almost immediately. I concentrated harder,
imagining a beam of light that went from the tip of my wand to my bag on the
table in front of me. This resulted in a faint white beam that lasted for about
a full second before disappearing.
Pleased, I resolved to practice that one more later.

Next I practiced the Dancing Lights Charm. First was the
wand movement, which came relatively easily as I focused on using just my wrist
for the required loops. Then I practiced the incantation, Lumos Numerosa. I focused on my bag and imagined a few orbs of
light clustering around it. Upon my first attempt, I conjured two orbs that
floated near my bag. As soon as I tried to move them, however, they winked out
of existence. I tried the charm again, and produced three orbs this time, that
again disappeared when I tried to move them. I resolved to practice this charm
further later as well.
