Chapter 1
During class, we performed an exercise where we turned our
minds inwards, finding the source of our power. When I did this, I was easily
able to feel what seemed to be a glowing ball. This energy was my power. I
could feel it, driven by my intent, moving up my wand arm and through my hand
and out into my wand and to its tip, which I was just pointing straight out. It
seemed that my wand was somehow connected to my hand, and I could hardly
distinguish between the two. Up until now, I had my eyes closed, however, I
opened them at this point to see small sparks shooting from the tip of my wand.
I quickly stopped the power flow, but not before a corner of my parchment had
lit on fire. Fortunately I had some water handy and I was able to quench it
before the Professor noticed.
We then moved to the Flight Charm, Wingardium Leviosa. First we practiced saying the spell. It took me
a few tries before I was able to say “wing-GAR-dium” correctly, with the double
“G”. Once that was finished, we practiced the wand movement on its own. As a
musician, the “Swish and Flick” wand movement seemed to come easily to me, as
it is similar to conducting a musical ensemble. Now it was time to practice
these two things together. The timing was key, and it took a couple attempts
before I successfully raised my piece of slightly burnt parchment and had it
floating above my desk.
After class, I was in my Dorm Room and decided to practice
some more. I took out the same piece of parchment from my bag and attempted to
lift it. This time it only took two tries before I was able to get everything
correct. This gave me confidence, and so I decided to try something heavier. I
went to a nearby bookshelf and grabbed a copy of Magical Theory to practice with. This took more concentration, but
after a few attempts, I was able to raise the book approximately an inch off of
the table.
