A Meeting
Chapter 2
Professor Penrose sat at his desk, his green eyes as piercing as ever. He beckoned Hugo into the chair before him, and Hugo awkwardly obliged. Curiosity burned distinctively within him, and he had not the patience to wait to see what Professor Penrose had summoned him for. Yet he tolerated Professor Penrose's intro lecture quietly and unprotestingly.
"Hugo Penwell," the teacher began calmly. "I apologise for so abruptly requesting your presence but I believe it is considerably important, if you will understand." He paused, then pressed on. "If you will excuse the suddenness of this whole affair I will proceed directly to the subject."
"A little surprised, but not offended at all, sir," Hugo replied quietly.
"I appreciate your patience," Professor Penrose said approvingly. "But now, let me proceed to the principal topic I wish to converse with you. You must realise that, along with you, the headmistress, including us staff, received news that your father had been imprisoned in Azkaban."
Hugo swallowed, and kept his gaze fixed on his knees.
"I do not mean to discomfort you," Professor Penrose said with unusual empathy. "But I am afraid it is necessary that I discuss this with you." He paused. "There have been complaints from parents with children here at Hogwarts objecting to your educating here. They think you don't have the right to be here as your father is presumed to be a Death Eater."
Hugo stared hard at the floor.
"Obviously there is no proof of the accusation," Professor Penrose continued. "But as your father is in Azkaban it is most likely someone's opinion of him would be negative.
Hugo nodded reluctantly.
"So in that case, I am afraid we must attend to these parents' complaints," Professor Penrose said heavily. "Look, Penwell, you are nearing completing sixth year. I know missing your last year of education here would be hard, but really, I hear Durmstrang accepts students already halfway through their magical tuition."
"B-But -" Hugo began objectionably. Leave Hogwarts? A sudden anger pulsed within him, and he stood up. Professor Penrose rose too.
"I'm sorry, Penwell, but maybe this is necessary - you don't realise how many protestations we've had -"
"It's not necessary," Hugo said, his voice shaking. "I - I - I'm not leaving Hogwarts."
Sternness flashed across Professor Penrose's eyes. "I don't want this any more than you do," he said gently.
"I don't care - I'm not going," Hugo said defiantly. "I don't care what those stupid parents think -"
"You must understand -"
"No." Hugo's voice was resolute and determined. "I said I don't care."
