Chapter 1
Bella shivered. She stared out of the window of their little cottage, watching the heavy snow fall. She was wearing a long furry coat, but she was still bitterly cold. Once or twice she had heard wolves howling, but she hadn’t been creeped from the sound. Her family had four Huskies, and of course they howled all the time. She longed to see proper wolves though. Then someone would interrupted her thoughts.
“Bella, come here now!” Her stepmother was calling her sharply. Bella turned and looked at her. She hated her stepmother- even though she tried not to. Her actual mother had died from a virus. Bella ached from thinking about it. She glared in secret at her stepmother, and tiredly got up on her feet. Her father had been quiet ever since Bella’s real mother had died, and he had always been a cheery man.
“I want you to hurry up and wash these dishes!” Bella’s stepmother snapped.
“Yes, ma’am,” said Bella coldly. She snatched up a cloth and set to drying the dishes.
Just then her father entered the room. He had his face in his hands, and sat down on a chair.
“What’s the matter, Dad?” Asked Bella. But she already knew. Their money was running low, and Bella’s dad didn’t have a expensive job.
Dad was silent. Then thankfully Bella’s stepmother left the room, frowning slightly. So that made a chance for Bella to ask her father, “Can I go out dad? Really it’s so boring inside the house! I won’t go far. I will just be with the Huskies!”
Dad nodded slowly. Then he looked up at Bella and smiled slightly.
