The Thing

Chapter 6

"erm.." I could see my mother struggle. "yeah.."

Suddenly, Aphrodite came rushing in. "Father, father," she said, avoiding Hera's look, "I need your help, right now. Could you come with me, please?" Zeus sighed. "Yeah, sure.." He ended the meeting and everyone went to their rooms.

Not me.

I knew Thanate knew more. I knew Thanate knew who - or what - I am.

So for the first time, I went downhill alone - something strictly forbidden. But I had to know who I am and what I'm supposed to do. It was almost noon, so I figured I could eat some of that wonderful bread of her father's bakery.

"Hey, you! What are you doing he-" started one of Thanate's brothers, but I cut him off by pushing him aside and rushing in. Once in town, I went straight to Thanate's house - the market wasn't open, anyway - and I kept running.
"Thanathe," I was panting. What, goddesses don't have perfect condition! "Thanate.. [pant] do you know what [pant] you told me [pant] yesterday? About praying to [pant] gods? To Zeus and to Demeter and to .. I took a breath before I said it .. Persephone?"
Thanate just looked at me. Her head tilted to the side. "Are you okay?" she asked. "Yes, yes, don't mind me, just.. do you remember?"
"Uhm, yeah.. Yes, I do."
"Okay, nice. I'm afraid I have to tell you something. Please promise me you won't laugh at me, okay?" Thanate still didn't know what was going on. "Uhm, yeah.. Yes, of course!"
"Look, I don't - I don't really know how to say this, haha... Uhm.. It's a bit awkward? Look.. Zeus, and Demeter.. they are.. my parents? Which makes me.. Persephone..."

Thanate said nothing. Did nothing. Well, she didn't run away either, so I guess that was a good thing. After a silence that felt like centuries, Thanathe turned around. Yes. She showed me her back. I thought I was dead. It wasn't me that got to lie under he cold, hard ground, though.
It was her.

I freaked. I didn't know what to do. I thought I had lost a friend, I was somewhere different then my home town, I did not know who I was and what I was supposed to do. I had lost it.

So this.. thing.. inside me, started to talk to me. It wasn't me. Oh no, it was nothing like me. It was someone - or something - else, a monster. "Come on," it started to whisper, "come on, you know you can do it. This girl - she is nothing. A mortal. She let you think you had a friend, you had someone you could trust.. and then she turned around - literally - to leave you. Betray you. She doesn't understand you. She won't ever understand you. She isn't worth it. You know she doesn't deserve it.

She doesn't deserve to live."

She doesn't deserve to live.

I only saw Thanate. Everything around us, wasn't there. My eyes were focused on this one... creature. She doesn't deserve to live. I lifted my finger.
I stretched my arm.
I touched her.

And everything became black.
