A God?
Chapter 5
I looked at Hermes. Thanate looked at me. Hermes looked at Thanate. I looked at Thanate. Hermes looked at me. Thanate looked at Hermes.
We all looked down.
Thanate asked if she had done anything wrong. I couldn't speak. Hermes thanked Thanate, but said we needed to go and we were late already. I couldn't move. Hermes carried me away - bridal style - and put me down, once we were at the bottom of the Olympus. "I.. I-" I started, but Hermes shush'd me, grabbed my hand and helped me up the hill. Once home, I immediatly ran to my room (after greeting Zeus, of course) to think.
I didn't sleep that night
The next day, I asked my mother (without revealing I went downtown, of course) about .. us.
She told me Zeus is our father, taking care of us all, and that she was my mother, making sure I would be happy, always. And that I was their beautiful daughter, bringing happiness to every living ceature on this world. Like she always told me.
Only this time, I asked further. "How come I only get to see everyone on this hill? Why aren't there any mortal people? Why don't we die? What's downhill?"
I saw my mother struggling, trying to make more excuses. To hide the truth. "Mom..." I started, "Why-"
Demeter sighed. "Dear Persephone, you know I love you, right? Sometimes, parents love their children so much, that they want to protect them from all harm possible. Only, that's not possible. Your father and I, we.. We thought we were smart by not letting you know about all the bad things out there, so you wouldn't be curious and go look for them. I guess it was inevitable."
"How did you -"
"That dear Helios told me. He has a good heart, don't hate on him now. I guess it's time for you - and Hermes - to get to know some things. Come with me."
Demeter led me to the big room, Zeus and his siblings sometimes go in. Father was there already, just like Hades, Poseidon, Hera and Hestia. This meant something serious was about to happen.
Demeter told us to sit down. After making sure everyone was comfortable, she started to talk.
My mother told us - more or less - who we are.
She told us that long ago, there were Uranus (sky) and Gaia (earth). They were practically my grandparents. (Deme also told me to take a look at the library - there would be a book there about the origin of the earth, starring Uranus and Gaia.)
After a long story, my mother ended with: "[...] and that's why you're gods. Your goal is to make sure (almost) every living creature on earth feels good. Well, theoretically speaking. Anyways, people down there make offers and do other things to make us feel good, in return."
"I am the god of the sea," Poseidon exclaimed, "and my siblings here are gods and goddesses of other - less important - stuff. We practically rule the world."
"Yes, and I am the goddess of the harvest," mother said.
"But.." I didn't dare to ask, "what.. What goddess am I, then?"
