Thanate

Chapter 3

The second I had touched her, I was afraid. She could've yelled, screamed, run away, or maybe even hurt me, but none of that happened. Instead, she stopped for a moment, closed her eyes and became quiet. She hugged me back
I was stunned, she was amazed, we both didn't know what was going on and why, but that moment - those seconds, minutes, hours, years - was.. peaceful.
After this weird hug, she let me go, and stared at me. Several emotions were visable in her eyes. First of all, the sadness was still there, like before, but it seemed.. less crushing. Apart from that, there was this not understanding kind of emotion, she was obviously surprised. And, deep hidden, I could see that she was happy, as well, and sort of relieved. These positive emotions were still being mostly covered by all these dark, and sad feelings. I think I figured all this out in one tenth of a second, because almost immediatly after our meeting, she put up her mask again and the corners of her mouth went up. I still don't understand how anybody could have not seen the fakeness radiating of off her smile.

Anyways, after the kind-of-awkward encounter with the girl, Hermes dragged me back to the Olympus. Several months went by and by the time I turned 13, I begged and begged Hermes to come with me one more time. I had to know the story of this beautiful mortal child.

So once again, Hermes and I sneaked down the hill, went into the village - now grown into a big city. After several minutes, I spotted her again. And she spotted me.
"Good afternoon," she said, "I'm sorry I have to ask, and I feel a bit uncomfortable, but.. could you possibly be the person that had hugged me this long time ago?" Erm.. Wow. So she remembered me, huh? I felt a bit of a relief going through my body, and I relaxed. She left the stall to her bigger brother, and she invited me to her home. I mentioned Hermes, awkwardly standing a few meters away. "Oh!" she exclaimed, "Of course he can come in, too!" And so Hermes and I went into a Mortals' house for the first time ever.

It was beautiful. From the outside, the bakers' house looked a bit like all the other homes of that street, with white walls and an orange roof. The residence was formed in a U-shape, the entrance of it being in the gap. The moment one walked to the gate, the courtyard became visable. On the left and on the right there were walls, with 2 doors on each side. Up north was a higher wall, two stories high to be precise. The first floor represented the bathroom, while right above that, the bedrooms were placed. The bakery was nicely placed - right behind the two stories high wall. So every time he wanted to produce some bread, he had go through the bathroom. Yay hygiene! The living room and the actual bakery shop were on the left, while the kitchen and dining room were on the opposite side.

"It's not much, but I hope you like it," she said when the girl gave us some leftover bread. "You must be starving!"
This meal was the beginning of something really pretty, but at the same time, it was also the beginning of something horrifying.
While Hermes and I were eating, she explained she was called Thanate, and was the daughter of the best baker in town. The first time I saw her, this baker had just started and things were rough, Thanate was wearing her Brothers' clothes. But this time, the tables were turned and when the village was expanding, more people needed bread and so, the baker could afford more luxurious things. This particular day, Thanate was dressed in her prettiest dress, to attract customers. Normally, she would dress comfortably so she could help her mother with woman-stuff.
Thanate had 3 bigger brothers, all of them born to bake bread. Once father would die, his first son would take over the bakery with his new family, and keep the 2 other brothers: Thanate and her mother would have to find a new home, because the first son's wife would need the kitchen. Luckily, father was all healthy and happy and it looked like Thanate could stay home for a while.

I also asked about the weird statue thing in her garden. She said it was an altar. She said it was to ask the gods for help.
Thanate said she and her mother would often call for Demeter, the goddess of the harvest.
My mother was called Demeter.
Thanate also said she'd sometimes call for Zeus, because he was "the best of them all".
My father was called Zeus.
But the thing that surprised me the most, was when she said her father would sometimes pray for Persephone, because we needed spring to come.
I was called Persephone.

My name is Persephone.
