Chapter 7
Eleanor watched her chocolate frog jumping about on her seat and couldn't help but smile. How amazing magical things were. She glanced at Brynn, who was polishing her wand, and felt the usual pang of jealousy. If only...
Well some things just can't be, Eleanor told herself. So quit dreaming...
"We're almost there." Alban said, peering out the misty window into the night. "I can see the castle. We best get changed."
Brynn and Eleanor looked away while Alban got changed, and then got into their own robes.
The train was slowing down. Eleanor but her lip, trying to contain her excitement. She felt so strange in Hogwarts Robes, but weirdly comforted. Like this was normal. Like she belonged here.
But I don't, Eleanor thought. You're a squib!
The train stopped. Eleanor grabbed her bag and Brynn said, "Let's go. I want to get a horseless carriage to ourselves so that no one sees you." Her eyes were twinkling and she seemed to be enjoying herself very much. Eleanor wondered if Brynn was taking this seriously enough, but nodded and followed her and Alban out into the aisle. People were beginning to file out, but Eleanor would be the first off the train.
The Hogwarts Express ground to a halt and the doors opened. Eleanor, Alban, and Brynn jumped off into the clear night. "There are the carriages." Alban hissed. "This way."
As Eleanor made her way to a horseless carriage she saw a shadow at the edge of the lake calling, "Firs Years! Firs Years over 'ere!" She beamed, though no one could see it in the dark, for she knew she had just heard Hagrid, who Alban had told her about.
The three of them jumped into a Hogwarts carriage, quickly shutting the door and settling down into the seats inside. They sat in silence as the carriage trundled off, the three of them contemplating the feast waiting for them in the great hall. After about ten minutes the carriage slowed, and then stopped.
"Stay close to us." Alban whispered.
"And remember, you're a third year like us, and we'll be sitting together at the feast." Brynn winked.
The three of them jumped out of the carriage and made their way up the steps to the entrance hall front doors, which had just been opened wide. They walked inside with more students, and walked into the great Hall.
Eleanor's eyes were as wide as an owl's as she looked around her. Floating candles? A night sky? And there at the head of the table were the teachers. Eleanor followed Alban to the Slytherin table, and was about to sit down, when a snide voice said behind her, "Who are you?"
Eleanor turned to see a girl with blonde hair and thin lips examining her critically. "I've never seen you before." She said, tossing her head.
"Er - I'm-"
"She's a second year." Alban had noticed the conversation. "And of course you wouldn't have seen her, you don't really pay attention to anyone but yourself."
The girl smirked. "Oh, look! It's the loser of Slytherin house! The boy who just can't live up to his noble name!"
"Do you want me to hex you, Claire? Because if so, I've learnt this handy new spell which will make you look like an oversized jelly fish - I'm sure the look would suit you." Brynn pulled out her wand, smiling mock sweetly.
The girl, Claire, looked as if she had just been made to eat a slug. Then, with a 'hmph!' she tossed her hair and flounced loftily away.
"Meet Claire." Brynn said drily. "Or you can call her idiot, like us."
Eleanor giggled.
Alban, however, was not smiling. "Come on." He said roughly. "We're attracting too much attention."
They sat down at the long table. Eleanor was squeezed between Brynn and Alban, where she was less conspicuous.
Then the doors opened and the first years were ushered into the room. Eleanor watched as they were all sorted, and she began to wonder what house she would be in.
Probably Hufflepuff, she thought gloomily. The house my family hates. But as she looked over at the Hufflepuff table she thought that the inhabitants of it looked quite friendly.
Her thoughts were interrupted as a woman at the head table, with grey hair tied back tightly in a bun and emerald green robes.
"That's Headmistress Mcgonagall." Alban whispered.
"Welcome all of you to Hogwarts." The headmistress said, "Whether you are new or have been here before. I am eager to begin a new year at Hogwarts with you all."
