Chapter 2
Dinner was a quiet affair - the only sound was the scraping of cutlery. Eleanor wasn't exactly sure why the family ate together anymore. Maybe it was because it was the only time they conversed with each other and therefore the only time to catch up on anything that had happened.

Eleanor's father, Rabastan, had his eyes fixed on his food, his dark shoulder length hair hanging over his face. He had only been released from Askaban two years ago, and Eleanor knew that if her father looked up she would see that sunken look in his eyes that dementors caused one to have. Her mother was as as stiff and icy as always. Eleanor's two brothers, Asher and Alban, were conversing together. Eleanor caught the words 'school' 'magic' and 'friends' and felt a pang of jealousy. SHE would not be going to Hogwarts, of course. SHE would not get to make friends and learn magic. SHE was a squib, and she would stay home, even though she had turned eleven last week. The jealousy grew, and with it came anger. Eleanor began to breathe heavily, and her mother glared at her as if she had committed some sort of crime.

Alban spoke first. "What's wrong, Eleanor?" He asked her quietly. Alban was the second oldest, and he had always been nicest to Eleanor. While Asher, Rabastan and Avela (Eleanor's mother) always called her squib, or nothing at all, Alban saw it fit to use her real name, which Eleanor thought, was simply a decent thing to do. Not using her name was ridiculous.

Eleanor swallowed, and then shook her head. She didn't want to attract attention. She knew there was no point in complaining. She couldn't go to Hogwarts, even if her parents consented. She was a squib. She didn't possess magic powers.
But Alban continued to look concerned, and finally she said, as casually as she could, "So you're going off to Hogwarts the day after tomorrow?"
Rabastan looked up sharply, and his eyes narrowed. Eleanor quickly went back to her food, but Rabastan wasn't looking at her.
"They're still going to that blood traitor's school?" He said harshly, to Eleanor's mother.
Eleanor's mother did not answer at first. Then, very curtly and staring straight ahead, she nodded.
Rabastan glowered at her. "Why?" He demanded.
Eleanor's mother looked at him now. "I learnt there." She said sharply.
Rabastan snorted, but said no more.

The tense atmosphere lasted through out the meal, and as soon as Eleanor had finished she asked to be excused, extremely eager to be back in the wonderful world of her books. However, Alban gave her a pointed look and she took this as a signal to follow him to his room. Wondering what on earth this could be about, Eleanor obliged. Little did she know that in mere minutes she would be involved in something never attempted before...
