Lesson 6: Applying Your Will

Chapter 6
~A Matter of Will

-Think of willpower as mental power(like how strength represents physical willpower)
-Willpower(Non-magical): A measurement of one's ability to control their emotions, avoid bad temptations and make their thoughts and ideas known
-Willpower(Magical): Used to perform magic
-Some spells require no will(Ex:Wand-Lighting Charm)
-Some spells require a fair amount of willpower to work(Ex: Fire-Making Charm)
-the more will you focus into spell, the more violent the backfire if spell fails.
-Like pushing a heavy box with your mind
-Think about effect, and you will subconsciously achieve it
-Practice willpower through meditation
-Concentration: Ability to pinpoint target they want to affect with spell and how spell should act
-Willpower: Mental muscle that drives a spell and provides functioning power
-Ex: Hose. Concentration would equal where the water goes, willpower would equal the force of the water coming out from the hose

~The Levitation Charm Revisited

-Requires greater amount of will for heavier objects
-Minimal backfire for exerted will
-Visualize magic flowing from you and making target light enough to move
-Worst that happens is nothing(generally)

~The Sticking Charm

-Used to stick two surfaces together(2 container halves, lock to doorframe, posters to a wall, etc)
-1st used in Roman battle vessels around 100 BC
-Used to keep objects from falling off ships
-Lost popularity due to more permanent discoveries, and the Unlocking Charm was found as a counterspell
-Strength depends directly on willpower
-Spell Block:

Spell: The Sticking Charm
Incantation: Astrictus (a-STRIK-toose)
Wand Movement: The infinity symbol starting and ending in the center, encircling the two objects. (∞)
Willpower: High; determines how long the objects will remain stuck and how hard they are to separate
Concentration: Medium; on the two parts that should be stuck together

-Doesn't work on living animals
-Spell failure may result in the two objects not sticking, wrong objects sticking together, or a backfire usually resulting in the caster being stuck to the floor or other odd instances (like the caster's hair being stuck together). Seek help for these instances from an experienced witch/wizard
-Willpower most essential in this spell
-Can be countered with Unlocking Charm(though the better the Sticking Charm was cast, the harder it is to counter)

~Assignments

-Mandatory worksheet
-Journal(if you chose to do it), lessons 6 and 7 due next lesson
