Lesson 5: The Importance of Concentration
Chapter 5
~Concentration
-Concentration: Centering your mind and spell's effects on a spell in order to make it happen
-Not crucial in EVERY spell(like the Wand-Lighting charm)
-Many spells(like Levitation and Locomotion Charms) require concentration on both spell's target and spell's effects
-You can't avoid it if a spell requires it
-If you lose your concentration you'll either move the wrong target at best or unleash magic uncontrolled from your wand in a burst, at worst
-Your mind must be clear when casting a spell
-Practice focus through meditation
-If you're trying to perform the Severing Charm and you suddenly worry about cutting too deeply, it might happen since you were focusing on that rather than the intended effect
-May require visualization of the effect
~Spell Modifiers
-Modifier: Short word/phrase added to the end of a spell to modify target/effect
-Ex: Locomotor Charm can be modified by adding target name into incantation
-Sunlight and Dancing Light Charms are modifiers of Lumos
~The Sunlight Charm
-Like a directed, powerful flashlight rather than a candle going in all directions
-Spell block:
Spell: The Sunlight Charm
Incantation: Lumos Solem (‘LOO-mos so-LEM’)
Wand Movement: Single counter-clockwise loop ending with the wand pointed toward the target.
Willpower: Low to very high; determines color and intensity of light.
Concentration: High; the target of the light.
-Amount of willpower determines brightness of light
-Concentration much needed to target and maintain beam
-Beam ranges in intensity from faint white to a brilliant light golden yellow
-Does not turn scarlet if over charged
-Never point wand at your or anyone else's face
-Great practice spell
~The Dancing Lights Charm
-Allows you to conjure several, small floating lights
-Great practice for focusing on multiple targets at once
-Each orb gives off as much light as a candle
-Concentration is key
-Spell block:
Spell: The Dancing Lights Charm
Incantation: Lumos Numerosa (‘LOO-mos Noom-air-O-sa’)
Wand Movement: Single counter-clockwise loop, then several rapid counter-clockwise loops.
Willpower: None
Concentration: High; concentration should be maintained on all the orbs, and determines how many can be created.
-The most skilled caster can manage about a dozen orbs at a time
-You should be able to manage 3-5 orbs at a time
-Keeping them all together is easiest
~Assignments
-Mandatory worksheet
-Extra-credit but VERY STRONGLY recommended midterm exam!
-Extra-credit journal entries(lessons 4 and 5) if you chose to do the journal
