Lesson 2: Spellcasting Basics
Chapter 2
~The Source of Your Magic
-Nobody knows for sure where your magical ability came from
-Wizards usually pass it on to their children, but in rare cases they don't(offspring are called "Squibs")
-A Squib can still detect some magical activity and use some magical devices
-Muggles descended from (several generations removed) magical people can sometimes produce magical children(Muggle-borns)
-Pure-Bloods: Witches/wizards with no Muggle blood in their bloodlines. Purely magical.
-Half-Bloods: Witch or wizard with one magical parent and one non-magical or Muggle-born parent.
-Neither blood type is better than the other
-Magic comes naturally to us, and we can do it without thinking
-Magical power flows through your veins, in your blood
-When you randomly do magical acts without a wand when you're angry or scared(as sometimes happens with underage wizards when they first get their powers), that's you subconsciously doing magic
~Spellcasting Components
-They are incantation & pronunciation, wand movement, willpower, and concentration
-Incantation: "Magic Words", must be said with proper pronunciation. If not, at best, nothing will happen, and at worst disaster could strike
-"Never forget Wizard Baruffio, who said āsā instead of āfā and found himself on the floor with a buffalo on his chest." -Filius Flitwick
-Some witches and wizards can cast spells without an incantation, but it's very hard and takes much practice
-Wand Movement: shapes in the air you make with your wand to cast the spell. (Again, it's possible to cast a spell without wand movement, but this is very rare. Ex: Albus Dumbledore)
-Willpower: Magical strength and focus needed to perform the spell. Mental "push" that projects your magic. Difficult to master, but key for advanced spells
-Concentration: Centering your mind on your magic and the desired effect you want it to have.
-Includes target of magic and what you want magic to do.
-Concentration and willpower are not needed for some spellcasting
-Physical strength does not always equal magical power
~"Flight" Charms
-There were many imitation spells to the Levitation Charm(Wingardium Leviosa)
-The Hover Charm: Allows you to move an object up and down as long as you're touching it
Spell: The Hover Charm
Incantation: Levioso (lev-ee-O-so)
Wand Movement: Inward spiral then upward flick
Willpower: Moderate; determines how heavy of an object can be lifted.
Concentration: None
-The Rocket Charm: Propels an object straight into the air and back down again, hence the name(no physical touch needed)
Spell: The Rocket Charm
Incantation: Alarte Ascendare(A-lar-tay a-SEN-day-ray)
Wand Movement: Quick swish
Willpower: High; determines how high the object will ascend before falling
Concentration: None
-The Floating Charm: Allows you to move object up and down with control, without physically touching it. Can't float very high
Spell: The Floating Charm
Incantation: Fluito(Floo-EE-toe)
Wand Movement: Jab then upward flick
Willpower: High to very high depending on weight/distance of target
Concentration: Moderate; maintained on target
-Levitation Charm: Invented by Jarleth Hobart, closest Wizarding World has come to true flight
-Famous
-Controls up and down AND side to side movement of an object without physically touching it.
-Can sometimes lift objects too heavy to normally lift
-Can be used on a person but never ever should be attempted by a student.
Spell: The Levitation Charm
Incantation: Wingardium Leviosa (win-GAR-dee-um levi-O-sa)
Wand Movement: Swish and flick
Willpower: Low; Visualize your energy coming from your body and lifting the object.
Concentration: Moderate; on the thing you want to levitate
-As you say 'Wingardium' start swish; time so the swish ends just after you begin saying 'Leviosa'
-As you finish saying 'Leviosa' do the flick
-Keep mind focused on target
