Chapter 6
~Silverweed
-Quickly propagating herb
-Grows easily in most parts of world(especially temperate areas)
-aka Potentilla anserina or Argentina anserina
-Green on top and silvery underneath leaves
-Starting early summer, ea. plant produces 1 yellow flower that grows on a stalk
-Not picky, grows well with little encouragement
-Plant in soil just a bit above 7 on the pH scale - mildly alkaline
-Amount of sun doesn't matter, just don't plant in full shade
-The more sunlight, the faster it grows
-Water frequently
-Harvest the herb in dry weather
-To dry a plant, prepare plant and let it dry in a heated area(Muggles and wizards) or just use a drying charm
-Commonly used in potions
-Only used in dried form, often ground into powder
-Useful in Sore-Removing Serums and cramp easing
-The blooms could possibly be used in blemish-removing, but is not very researched because a side effect is fusing your teeth together
-Edible, used by livestock
~Nettle
-Weed
-Has tiny, stinging hairs on leaves and stem which gives the plant many magical properties
-Common in Northern Europe and Asia but also found in Southern Europe, South Africa, and Australia
-aka Urtica dioica
-Grows between 3 and 7 feet tall
-Prefers moist soil(water frequently)
-Does best in pH of 7.1-7.8 (improves plant's height, health, and rate of growth)
-Anything between full sun and partial shade works
-Wear dragonhide gloves when tending them!
-If you want to dry it, harvest between May and June before flowers appear
-Dry plants on a dry day
-Timing doesn't matter for fresh harvesting(some say to harvest after it's a foot tall though)
-Works well with magic
-Used frequently in potions
-Vivid yellow roots used often
-Fresh nettles used in Cure for Boils, dried nettles used in herbicide potion
-Uses of leaf and stem include tea, wine, hair tonics, and aid respiratory issues
-Flowers not as potent but useful for milder mixtures
-Roots useful in Curling Concoction
-Used in early times for things such as the Anglo-Saxon Nine Herbs Charm (actually a potion recipe that was paired with a spoken incantation for maximum efficacy)
-Above recorded in the 10th century as part of the Lacnunga Manuscript and intended to treat/prevent poisonings and infection.
-also used among ancient peoples to prevent baldness, though other herbs and ingredients have become more popular for this use since.
~Motherwort
-aka Leonurus cardiaca, related to mint family
-Weed
-Reaches 2-3 ft tall
-Hardy root networks
-Native to Southern Europe/Southern Asia and spread to North America
-Quite aggressive
-Happy in shade or sun, dry or wet soil, and any pH soil
-Non-ideal pH levels just a mild deterrent
-Perfect pH level is 7.4-7.8
-Some herbologists actually place it in less than ideal conditions on purpose
-To remove, pull up from roots
-Herb/flowers used to aid/spur childbirth
-Safe in late pregnancy stages and during breastfeeding
-Sometimes a substitute for potions for heart issues stemming from anxiety/heart disease
-Also suspected use in aiding rabies or hydrophobia
~Fluxweed
-aka flixweed or tansy mustard
-Member of mustard family
-Green stems topped with yellow flowers in July and August
-Native to Western Asia but spread across Europe and rest of Asia
-Cultivated in greenhouses worldwide
-aka Descurania sophia
-Grows 10-30 in. tall
-Prefers full sun
-Likes dry conditions
-Wait till soil is completely dry to water
-Soil needs to be arable - suitable for plant growth in general, with a pH between 4.5-9
-Wide range of uses, including transformations(like Polyjuice Potion)
-Helps with dysentery or diarrhea
-If whole plant is used in a potion, it's used fresh for higher potency
-Dried flowers helpful for Bottled Butterflies in the Stomach
-Seeds can be used dry or raw in the Thirst-Quenching Quaff
~Magic Moisture Removal(Dehumidifying Spell)
-Not the same as the Quick Drying Charm
-Removes all moisture from the air it's cast on
-Safety concerns with using on a large area
-Start with small wooden boxes
-Place herb inside, seal container and cast spell
-The larger the container, the more willpower
-Spell block:
