-All plants covered in this lesson are non-magical

~Valerian Roots and Sprigs

-Valeriana officinalis native to Europe and Asia, though it's been introduced to North America
-Muggles are aware of its existence but not its full powers
-Roots and sprigs can be used
-Root grows underground, supplies water, anchors plant
-Sprigs are the parts that grow leaves and flowers
-Valerian can grow up to 5' tall and forms bunches of white flowers
-Thrives in sun and requires at least 7 hrs of sunlight
-Requires soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5
-Bury seed an eighth of an inch down
-Harvest roots in fall and spring, harvest sprigs at any time(though wait till June/July if you want flowers)
-Possesses sedative properties - the root is good for calming draughts/sleeping potions
-Sprigs are good for sleeping potions and attract cats/drive them crazy (similar to catnip)
-Dogs can be repelled with it, especially when made into essential oil/potion
-There's a Mediterranean plant called 'red valerian' but its not actually a valerian
-Valerian also helps heart palpitations and poor eyesight

~Lilies

-Come in almost as wide a variety as roses
-Come in many colors(blue, purple, white, yellow, etc) and can be many shapes
-Come from genus Lilium and grow from bulbs
-Daylilies, water lilies, peace lilies, and lilies of the valley are all "fake" lilies
-Grow all over Europe and Asia and northern North America
-Grow 2-6 feet tall
-Need between 5-6 hours of sunlight, require pH from 5.5-6.5
-Plant bulbs 4-8 inches below ground
-Water whenever you see dry ground(around every 3 days)
-When winter comes, let lilies lose their petals naturally
-Best known for poisonous uses(100+)
-Highly poisonous to cats and Kneazles
-Can be used with other ingredients to regulate heart rate
-Roots can help burns
-Sometimes used to improve potion scents
-React very well with magic

~Ashpodel

-Relative of the lily
-Native to Mediterranean
-We'll focus on summer ashpodel(Asphodelus aestivus)
-Grows 1-5 feet tall
-Need at least partial sunlight
-Soil needs pH of 6-6.5
-Don't overwater and make sure pot drains well
-Water when soil is visibly dry
-Used to make Sticking Solution
-Used in strong sleeping potions(like the Draught of Living Death)
-Ocamier Flinson has discovered other uses(like skin-lightening and skin regrowing)

~Knotgrass

-Aka cowgrass, hogweed, and lots of other names. Genus name: Polygonum aviculare
-Common
-Height depends on environment. Varies from a few inches to 6 feet tall
-Blooms in May(flowers have no purpose) and flowers last till fall
-Plant in soil with a pH of 6-7
-Needs at least 3 hours of sun, hard to overwater
-Used in weddings sometimes, symbolic of union of 2 people
-Modernly knotgrass mead is drank at weddings to remember the tradition
-Key ingredient in Polyjuice Potion
-Used in Shortening Solutions and de-aging potions.
-Used in olden days as love/fertility potion(but we now have more potent ingredients to work with)

~The Growth-Starting Charm

-Developed by Calla Evora in early 1900s
-Weaker than Herbivicus Charm
-Effects not instantaneous
-Simpler/gentler on plants
-Don't put in too much willpower(or plant will exhaust, bloom fast, wilt, and die)
-Use sparingly
-Because spell accelerates plant growth, they might need more pruning, watering, and/or compost in the next week or so
-Works best on plants growing from bulbs(since bulbs store up lots of resources and can handle it)
-Spell block:
Spell: The Growth-Starting Charm
Incantation: Virenesco(VEER-en-es-co)
Wand Movement: Whirlpool motion, then flick to pull up
Willpower: Low
Concentration: Low
