Lesson 2: Tools of the Trade
Chapter 2
~Protective Particulars
-Basic Herbology equipment separated into 2 categories: Protection and Plant Care
-Protective equipment: dragonhide gloves, earmuffs, and a wand. When doing practical work, closed-toed shoes and an apron are recommended.
-A mask is sometimes needed for more hazardous plants
-Do not bring your cloak or tie to class, as they could be hazardous around plants. Hang cloaks on cloak rack if needed.
-Essence of Dittany and Antidote to Common Poisons can be found here should anyone get into trouble
-Over 30,000 witches and wizards have had preventable accidents in the past year. 61% of these mishaps were caused by the herbologist forgetting dragon hide gloves.
-Never panic
~Tools for Tending
-Tending equipment includes dragon dung, Mooncalf dung, and centaur tears.
-Dragon dung works because of the properties of the acid in a dragon's stomach related to its fire-breathing abilities. Acids break materials down to their most natural state.
-Dragon dung is scentless, as dragons use all odorous gases in the fire they breathe. Used as a fertilizer
-Mooncalf dung is also a fertilizer
-Very gentle
-does not have the potency of dragon dung
-Centaur tears are a favorite drink for most plants(except for non-saltwater plants)
-Very vitamin rich
-Centaurs have a great relationship with the earth and deeply study herbology and astrology.
-Some, such as Hagrid and Dumbledore, have formed bonds with centaur clans. They can sometimes form agreements with centaurs so that they will give us tears for the betterment of plants.
-It is illegal, of course, to forcibly take tears from the centaurs for very obvious reasons
~Cauldrons
-Pewter: Good for beginners and provided here at Hogwarts.
-low melting point, so it's prone to melting and explosions
-Good for basic plants and herbs but nothing more
-Brass: Higher melting point at 920 degrees Celsius.
-Resistant to wear & tear from burning plants
-Don't let any plant material stick to the sides because it will react with the metal, emit blue-green fire, and release zinc into the air!
-Copper: Excellent for use with plant-based ingredients
-Copper is recyclable
-Has highest melting point of most common 3 cauldrons(1085 degrees Celsius).
-Safest, best price, and most practical option of the three most common cauldrons
-Silver: Great for nocturnal plants and can be used with the moon to amplify properties
-Melts between 780 and 962 degrees celsius
-More pricey; only get a pure silver one.
-Gold: Ideal for all plants and categories
-Has second highest melting point of 1064 degrees celsius
-Avoid cheap versions; they almost always include pyrite/fool's gold, which is illegal to use in potion making because pyrite(melting point of 1100 degrees celsius) reacts with plants, heat, and water!
