Lesson 9: Glass to Sand and Review
Chapter 9
~Glass to Sand Shield
-Some argue it could be a charm
-When glass is crushed into tiny pieces, it's sometimes considered sand
-Professor believes it is a transformation
-1 of few transfiguration spells that can be used as a shield
-Was used in the famous duel between Dumbledore and Voldemort at the MoM
-Penrose lecture
~The Transformation
-Final spell
-Spell block:
Spell: Glass to Sand
Incantation: Contrita Specularma (CON-tree-ta spek-u-LARH-mah)
Wand Movement: Point wand at glass
Concentration: Low - Visualize glass breaking apart and disintegrating, especially focusing on the small pieces of sand
Willpower: Low
-Not many ways it can backfire, except for nothing happening, which can be VERY dangerous if glass is flying toward you.
-Practice only in classroom
-Other backfire is that the glass doesn't break down enough to be considered "sand"
~Origins
-Invented by Miriam Portfender in 1884
-part of research for spells easily used for protection in natural disasters
-Found uses in defensive combat
~Review
-this review will NOT be considered as sufficient for your only studying - study on your own as well!
Lesson 1- Basic intro, transfiguration is "the alteration of objects in our physical world", more scientific magic branch. Described Transformation Formula and its variables - difficulty, wand power, concentration, viciousness, weight, and the unknown variable, and discussed dangers of transfiguration
Lesson 2 - 4 transfiguration branches: Transformation, Conjuration, Vanishment, and Untransfiguration, and sub branches of switching, trans-species transformation, and human transfiguration. Also general transformations, like animate to animate. Not under a sub branch
Lesson 3 - 5 Principle Exceptions to Gamp's Law: food, magical energy, love, knowledge, and life. These are natural laws, not man-made.
Lesson 4 - transformation theory, general transfigurative process, discussed concentration and willpower. Willpower - needed for large transfigurations and live transformations. Concentration needed when there are fewer similarities between your 2 objects, and when resulting object is more complex/detailed. Transfiguration uses small, precise wand movements and incantations derived from Latin. Discussed variations in transfigurative spells and the ability to cast on objects that are similar to the objects the spell is meant for.
Lesson 5 - middle of year, first transformation: Matchstick to Needle, learned how to do sensory breakdown
Lesson 6 - Smoke to Dagger
Lesson 7 - Fork to Quill
Lesson 8 - Whistle to Watch
Note: Be familiar with the above transformations, their sensory breakdowns, spell itself, history, and usage. Also be familiar with the lectures in lesson 6 by Mr. Magnusson and this lesson by Professor Penrose.
