Lesson 8: Lab #2: Forgetfulness Potion

Chapter 8
~Introduction

- Forgetfulness Potion's discoverer was Federica Quimia in 16th century
-Specific history unknown since she kept testing the potion on herself as she experimented
-discovered a variation much more potent than what we call the Forgetfulness potion today
-we're brewing a much milder type that causes mild carelessness and difficulty remembering minor details
-Her loss of capability may have been due to her many unsuccessful attempts at brewing
-It's often used during pranks
-also used by a mental healer to treat extreme anxiety disorders or trauma

~Before Brewing

-The Forgetfulness Potion
-EBT:
Pewter: 60 mins
Brass: 51 mins
Copper: 45 mins
-Ingredients:
2 drops of Lethe river water
2 Valerian sprigs
4 mistletoe berries
2 spoonfuls of honey OR 2 standard measures of mint leaves (optional)

~Instructions (All directions copied and pasted directly from lesson)

Part One

1. Take dropper to add two drops of the Lethe river water to cauldron.
2. Heat cauldron to 394 Kelvin (that is 121°C/250°F) for 20 seconds, then turn down flame.

3. Add the 2 Valerian sprigs to the cauldron, then use wand to stir your cauldron clockwise 3 times.
4. Leave potion to brew in pewter cauldron at 383 Kelvin (45°C/110°F) for 30 mins. During this step, the potion will be a deep blue and is likely to emit red sparks. (This would be 25 mins in brass cauldron or 22 mins in Copper.)

Part Two

5. Add 4 mistletoe berries to the mortar.
6. Optional step: Add 2 spoonfuls of honey OR 2 standard measures of mint leaves to the mortar as well.
7. Grind with pestle until the ingredients are thoroughly mixed.
8. Add 2 measures of this mixture to the cauldron and stir with wand counter-clockwise 5 times.
9. Let potion finish brewing for 20 mins. (16 mins in a brass cauldron or 13 mins in copper)
10. Take your potion off the flame entirely. The potion should now be a glimmering orange-red, and will still occasionally give off sparks. It will smell like any additive you may have used (honey or mint). If you did not use one, it may smell a little bit like burnt cinnamon.
11. Stir potion to ensure it is of uniform consistency and then transfer it to one of the glass phials.
-Remember to properly label the phial

~Usage/Storage Notes

-Effects usually last 6-8 hrs
-Don't take the same day as changing passwords, etc or engaging in important life decisions
-Those with neurological problems or brain injury history should not take it or it'll result sometimes in permanent memory loss
-Always consult with healer before taking for psychological reasons
-Don't give to those under the age of 5 or who are pregnant or may become pregnant
-Should be left to mature at room temp for 2 days
-Should be stored in dark, cool place
-Can be kept up to 6 months before requiring safe disposal

~Lethe River Water

-Interesting, rather unique
-Named after Greek mythological location known as the Lethe River, 1 of 5 rivers of the Underworld
-In the myth, those who died drank from it to lose memory of their lives before they moved on to the afterlife
-Actually comes from the Kaybetti River, a small river in Turkey near the town of Oren
-Enchanted to escape Muggle detection for over 1000 years
-Acts as powerful memory suppressant
-Works for the magical and Muggles
-Even in small doses, can lead to serious memory loss/forgetfulness
-In high doses, can lead to a coma or even death
-Just like any other water molecule
-Among the cleanest water on planet because of its strong magical effect
-2 popular theories as to where it got its properties:
-1)at one point, a very powerful early witch or wizard enchanted the very source of the river for reasons unknown. Maybe for defensive or offensive reasons during a war; at that time, Muggles and wizards still often worked together. This magical being may have operated on behalf of an army or governing body to either protect their home from invasion or to use the water as a means of overthrowing a competitor in their own land.
-Enchantment would have had to be permanent restructuring of particles in water
-Oldest theory
-2) there's a plant/fungus living at the river's source and some of the magic is absorbed into the water(no molecular change; just a magic "residue"). Any actual plant/fungus particles are filtered out before it reaches the place where witches/wizards bottle it
-Nobody has ever reached the source; if they did, the forgetfulness magic was so strong it wiped their memory of it away

~Assignments

-Mandatory quiz
-Extra-credit essay
-Study for finals next week!
