Lesson 6: Dragons
Chapter 6
~Introduction
-Dragon is an iconic creature in wizarding world and 1 of the most long-standing romantic images for Muggles
-Accounts of dragons exist as far back as between 1000 and 1300 BC
-Other Muggle accounts have described serpent-like creatures(likely basilisks)
~Muggle Thoughts
-There is a 13th century tale of a swiss knight named Heinrich von Winkelreid who killed a terrorizing dragon(but he may have taken credit for wizard's work)
-After dragon died, Sir Heinrich died after coming in contact with dragon blood
~Wizarding World
-Still dangerous
-Almost every part of the dragon can be used for magical purposes
-A previous Hogwarts Headmaster discovered the 12 uses for dragon's blood, including anesthetic, painkiller, cleaning agent, disinfecting agent, and even in certain poisons
-Heartstring used as wand core and is one of the most powerful cores
-Wizards also use dragon claws, dung, horn, hide, liver, and meat
-Dragon parts some of most powerful and also some of most magically resistant
-Ex: Dragon skin impervious to most spells(though the Stunning Spell is moderately effective for adults)
-Even after dragon dies, it's difficult to affect dragon's inner parts with magic
-That's why it can be hard to research dragon part uses
-Dragon liver often used as antidote to strong poisons, physically tough to cut
-Likelihood of backfire increases when using spells on a dragon's anatomy
-magical immunity may be coded in dragon's dna
-Or, they are covered in so much magical energy that any further added energy is like a drop of water falling into an ocean
-In 1709 dragon breeding was outlawed at the Warlock's Convention
-There are places like the Romanian Dragon Sanctuary to study/preserve dragons but breeding for further study is illegal
-Dragon eggs are Class A Non-Tradeable Material in the magical world, but many are still traded on the black market
-Chinese Fireball eggs are popular ingredients in fertility and luck potions
-Dragon claws known to boost memory and intelligence
-Should not use them in school!!
-Do not actually help with intelligence/memory, they just temporarily boost those brain chemicals, so they can wear down your nervous system over time
-Sometimes can cause memory "crashes" after use.
~Assignments
-Mandatory Quiz
-Extra-credit essay(the benefits, dangers, and ethical questions associated with researching dragon DNA)
