Lesson 8: Fire Crabs
Chapter 8
~Fire Crabs
-Grey-green skin
-live in jeweled shell
-Categorized as Beast
-Classified as XXX
-Can be extremely dangerous
-Can shoot fire out of their bottoms
-Rare/endangered
-Protected in a colony on the native islands of Fiji
-Safety procedures if you come across one:
a) wear properly fitted clothing, nothing loose
b) always have wand in hand
c) always wear dragonhide gloves
d) never stand directly in rear of a fire crab
-Must attain a special MoM license to keep one as a pet, but not illegal
~Why They're Endangered
-Shell desired by both wizards and Muggles
-Muggles want shells because of the wealth they bring
-Some, like goblins, value gems more than others - merpeople value them less than goblins
-Muggles will seek out gems due to their high trade value, like rubies, sapphires, emeralds, opals, and diamonds. Can be paid large amounts of money
-Gemologist or professional jeweler pay lots
-Magical people want the shell because they're sometimes used as cauldrons
-The heat exuded from the shells will lessen the brewing time of potions
-Heat from cauldron doesn't last longer than a few days
-Fire crab is left homeless and exposed to attack
-Fire crabs deserve the same amount of respect we do, even when attacking. They're just reacting to threats
~Defending Against A Fire Crab
-You probably won't encounter a fire crab (unless you visited Fiji), but this info is still important
-Several methods, in theory, will work:
-Any water spell, since fire crabs can't spew fire if doused with water
-Knockback Jinx (but don't put in too much willpower or you'll hurt the creature)
-just put in enough willpower to send the creature flying far away from you
-once the fire crab is distanced from you, it will become disinterested since you're no longer a threat
-Since they're endangered, willfully harming one could result in serious consequences from the MoM
-the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures monitors fire crab sanctuary and the health of each fire crab
-Harming a fire crab could lead to a heavy fine or even time in Azkaban (depending on injury severity)
~Closing
-Always be on your toes
-When confronted with a strange creature, look for similarities between it and the creatures you do know
-It's likely strange creatures will have similar defense mechanisms to another
-Be creative and willing to try new things
-Best defense: be unpredictable (applies to all combat situations you may be in)
