Lesson 7: Ghosts, Poltergeists, and Gytrashes
Chapter 7
~Ghosts
-Essence of a person left behind when person dies
-Weightless, transparent, no physical form
-Incapable of touching or moving objects
-When a person walks through one, they feel a chill
-Can become invisible
-try to avoid walking through them because they may be offended
-Muggle ideas(incorrect): Anyone can become a ghost, and come back to haunt and cause chaos
-In reality, only wizards/witches can become ghosts
-Have no ill intent upon the living
-may hold grudges against other ghosts from incidents from when they were alive
-Most are quite funny/chatty, but some can be grumpier(e.g. Moaning Myrtle)
-Courtesy rules when talking to ghosts:
1. Never bring up the topic of how they died unless they bring it up first
2. Never draw attention to the fact the ghost isn't alive(like mentioning eating/drinking) since they might get offended
3. Always thank the ghost for their time
-Each ghost is different
~Poltergeists
-Spirits of chaos
-Inhabit places where lots of people gather
-Castles like Hogwarts perfect places for them to live
-Recorded cases of them in Muggle and wizard homes
-Can move/touch things, often will to cause lots of chaos
-rare for them to have a distinct form; usually can't be seen
-Peeves is a rare exception
-Ways to tell if a poltergeist is around:
1. Banging on the walls or, noises that you can't explain
2. Objects suddenly being thrown across rooms, seemingly on their own
3. Strange, unexplainable smells
4. Physical attack from unseen forces
-Can tell from a combination of these signs
-Hard to rid area of poltergeist
-Only way to end one is to abandon the place where they live; they will fade
-You can't return or the poltergeist will come back
-Can be controlled rarely - like Peeves and Dumbledor & Bloody Baron
-Might listen to fellow troublemakers like Fred and George
-Very rarely tries to kill anyone
~Gytrashes
-Ghostly, large dogs appearing only at night
-white with pitch black eyes
-very vicious
-Favorite food is humans
-Can blend into surroundings until they are right on top of you
-frequently attacks in groups of 2-6
-known to have packs in a couple places, including the Forbidden Forest
-Hunting method: bites, darts away, repeat. Especially dangerous in large groups
-Can chase away with the Wand Lighting Charm(also works on annoying ghosts)
