Backstory

To pass one's OWLs and NEWTs, a wizard or witch must learn to cast spells without a word, silently weaving magic by mental command and dextrous wandwork. To become a wordsmith, one must do the opposite, and invent new spells and incredible magicks through the combination of old words and the creation of new ones. Often this process involves not only the flick of a wrist but the fine finger manipulations required for the quill-and-ink. An extra syllable here, a rhyme there, and pedantry aplenty can create wonders beyond the wand and pen of an ordinary witch or wizard. This is the job of the wordsmith: to create, to invent, and to speak.
