Backstory

Sirius Black is the oldest child of Walburga and Orion Black, from a long line of wealthy purebloods, with a tradition of being sorted into Slytherin. Though home life was never particularly good, things got much worse when he was sorted to Gryffindor, coming to a head when he was sixteen and his father made plans to have him given a Dark Mark.

Sirius ran away from home that year to the refuge of his best friend, James Potter. He was welcomed warmly into his home, and had never experienced a more loving home life up until then. He quickly grew to think of his friend more as a brother, and returned to Hogwarts the next year happier than ever.

His closest friends in school were, by James's admission, called the Marauders. Because of their friend (and Sirius's partner) Remus's lycanthropy, the other three studied on transfiguration until they could become animagi to keep him company during full moons. This is were the nicknames, Moony Wormtail Padfoot and Prongs, came from.
