Background / History | Persephone was a halfblood raised in an odd equilibrium between the magical and the non-magical worlds. Her mother, Alessandra Kalligern, was her link to the non-magical world as a muggleborn witch with a strong affinity for hands-on activities, other cultures, and world-wide adventures. Persephone’s father, Ceres Astyrian, was the link to the wizarding world, and had a strong fascination for all things Herbology, agricultural, and mythological.
Due to the combined interests of her parents, Persephone’s youth was filled with travels from one country to another, and she encountered all varieties of life (the dark sides, fortunately, were few and far between), creatures, and stories. In spite of the constant shifting from place to place, the young witch had one notable fascination that never wavered---Wandlore. No matter where they went, Persephone was always clamoring to visit the local wandmaker, vying to learn about the specificities of each one’s practice. Whenever she was taken to a bookstore---once she could be pulled from the fiction section---she would run straight on for the books on Wandlore.
As she grew older---or more appropriately, as she approached the age of 10, Persephone couldn’t help but notice how limited the different wand woods and cores seemed to be. Yes, there were a decent number of wood options, and yes, outside of Ollivander’s there were more than three possible cores, but there were also so many more, she knew. On July 19th, three days after her birthday and, consequentially, her Hogwarts acceptance letter, Persephone had already decided upon what she was going to become---a wandcrafter.
Not a wandmaker, like Ollivander, no, she was going to research ALL the woods that weren’t already used in the practice---discover their special properties and affinities---and look into all magical creatures that weren’t a part of used wand cores. Persephone had her heart dead-set on wandcrafting, making new wand combinations with new materials, not wandmaking.
And upon her arrival at Hogwarts, her research began.
Persephone took an immediate shine to Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures---seeing as these would help her find other potential resources---and to Ancient Runes as well, something she couldn't help but feel drawn in by. Naturally, she pushed herself in other classes as well, as an in-depth understanding would help her determine what did and did not work well together. It was in her free time that Persephone's true research began.
She currently has a journal (that, when complete, she may likely publish) in which she records all of her findings---both on potential woods and of all magical creatures from whom a core was never made.
So many things to research,
So little time to record!
