Backstory

If I am going to be entirely honest, I must admit that I am still somewhat skeptical about this entire "Witchcraft and Wizardry" concept. When I first got my letter, I read it over, chuckled, and tossed it in the trash. I've always loved a good story, but never really believed in them. I mean, that would be horribly impractical, right?

I guess I should be grateful that I've been staying with Jessica, of all people, who noticed the letter in the trash and took me aside for a talk. I found out that Jessica is something known as a "Squib", which, if I understand correctly, implies that she somehow did not inherit her biological parents' aptitudes for magic (assuming it is genetic - the coexistence of "Muggleborns" and Squibs is somewhat contradictory). That apparently was sufficient reason for her to be made an outcast from the Wizarding society. While I feel a comment about the ridiculousness of discriminating by genetics is appropriate, I cannot do that without also including a commentary on the racism that is present in "Muggle" society. Does racism exist to the same degree in the Wizarding world, or is it nullified by the debate over blood purity?

Anyways, while I do trust Jessica, I cannot help but believe all claims I've heard people - wizards - making. I sincerely doubt that an entire community has remained a secret for so long. These claims are supported by the books I've been reading, and they've even been explained to some extent, but even magical beings make mistakes. I guess these are the questions I will be inquiring about once I get to Hogwarts.

On a more personal note, I cannot help but wonder about my parents. Were they both magical? Just one? It is a small community, so surely someone would have known them, right? That, or I am Muggleborn. Either way, I suppose I will be finding out soon.
