William was born the son of a Muggle astronomer and his wife. He lived with them in the Irish countryside until he was five, when he was adopted by two Americans after his parents died in a car crash that killed them both instantly, but spared him. His adoptive father was an auror, his mother a magizoologist. They lived in Ireland until he was six, and then moved to the United States so that his mother could continue her research on the native species.

He grew up on a small ranch in the mountains of Montana, where they took in injured creatures for rehabilitation and release. He grew to love and respect the creatures they cared for, and found that their company was far more welcome than that of other people. He would escape up into the mountains frequently, studying the creatures he found and excitedly coming back to tell his mother what a particular one had done. Despite his fascination with animals, his bond was closer to his auror father than the one with his mother. He loved the stories his father would tell, about who they were hunting, and what had happened at the office. It thrilled him the same way the animals calmed him.

His father died the summer before his eleventh birthday, while on a case. When his letter arrived (two: one from Ilvermorny, his mother's school, and one from Hogwarts, his father's) he readily told his mother that in his father's memory, he wished to attend Hogwarts, and to go through schooling to become a magizoologist, like his mother.

Growing up on the mountain formed his wild spirit and strong will. Although quiet and fumbling in social situations, he is strongly opinionated and stubborn. He's a fierce enemy, though not without provocation, but he is an even fiercer friend: compassionate and understanding, quick to come to the aid of others, and loyal to a fault. He is hardworking and dedicated, both in his work and in his relations with others, and he works tirelessly to achieve the things he sets his mind to. Making time to be still is a necessity, either alone or with quiet company, and he can often be found in the owlery or in a far corner of the library with his books. He is dedicated, willing to work for what he wants, and helping others along the way when they need it.
