Backstory

Born into a half-blood family in a remote part of Scotland, Rowan grew up in the shadow of the Highlands, where magical creatures were as much a part of daily life as any household pet. Rowan’s father was an herbologist, while their mother was a former dragon tamer who left the job after an accident that nearly cost her life. Rowan grew up hearing stories of daring adventures with Hebridean Black dragons and rare magical creatures from around the world.

At Hogwarts, Rowan was sorted into Hufflepuff, where a love for Care of Magical Creatures blossomed under Professor Kettleburn’s mentorship. While many students steered clear of dangerous creatures like Blast-Ended Skrewts and Acromantulas, Rowan couldn’t get enough. Rowan also discovered a natural affinity for communicating with Thestrals, who became a symbol of understanding life and death after the loss of a close childhood friend.

After graduating, Rowan initially worked for the Ministry in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. However, frustration quickly set in due to the Ministry’s rigid classification of certain creatures as “dangerous” or “worthless.” When Rowan refused an order to exterminate a family of Mooncalves that had accidentally wandered into Muggle territory, it led to dismissal and a tarnished reputation in the magical bureaucracy.

Determined not to let the Ministry dictate what creatures deserved protection, Rowan set out on a self-funded expedition to document rare, misunderstood magical creatures across Europe. During this journey, Rowan saved an injured Nundu cub from black-market traders and earned the trust of a territorial Chimera in Albania—a feat that gained some fame in certain magizoologist circles.

Now based out of Hogsmeade, Rowan’s hidden sanctuary in the Forbidden Forest is a refuge for magical creatures who need a safe place to heal or hide from persecution. Rowan is also an unofficial “mentor” to Hogwarts students with a passion for creatures, sneaking them into the sanctuary to see Thestrals or feed Bowtruckles (strictly against school rules, of course).

Rowan’s ultimate dream? To create a new classification system for magical creatures—one that prioritizes empathy and understanding over fear and control.
